Zoom Out: Adapting Your Perspective
We have been conditioned throughout our lives to produce THE answer – a single, definitive answer to a question or problem. However, complex challenges rarely come with a singular, simple solution. While uncertainty can be seen as a threat or risk, embracing the discomfort is the new norm and we must lean into it as an expected part of the leadership process. A leader’s ability to navigate change, disruption and uncertainty is paramount in a world that has become increasingly turbulent and volatile.
Today’s issues have many interdependent elements that change in unpredictable ways and lead to unforeseen outcomes. While it can be tempting to break a challenge into various components to “solve,” this assumes that one has greater control over the problem at hand. It can also narrow your view and obscure your perspective. “Zooming out” can help leaders shine a light on assumptions that may not be visible from the trenches. An elevated vantage point can enable a view of larger patterns and inter-dependencies leading to adaptation, re-calibration, and new solutions. “Zooming out” can equip corporate real estate professionals with the knowledge and skills needed to emerge as thoughtful leaders who may not have the single answer but know how to ask the right questions.

Putting it Together
Since March of 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic first hit globally, comfort zones, our understanding of the world, how we live in it, how we work in it, and how we do business, have all been pulled apart. But now it’s time to put it back together.
As the world seeks to realign and define the new normal, corporate real estate (CRE), the businesses they serve, and their customers, are looking for answers to how we all fit together. How do people, place, and purpose help to fulfill this aim? How do CRE, HR, IT, continue to work together and better? How do we promote and encourage ESG and DEI efforts such that they become ingrained in business? As leaders who are at the forefront, seeking and implementing answers to these questions, you have the knowledge and the expertise to lead the charge and define the future.

The Hair Salon Exhibition Opening
The Hair Salon, led by University of Houston Interim Director of Interior Architecture Sheryl Tucker de Vazquez, explores the generative potential of natural Black hair in the conception of architecture. Like race and architecture, hair texture and its care practices are constructs that can be utilized as a means of dominance and control or as a force of resistance and liberation. As an extension of the Black body, natural Black hair remains at the center of dialogues on power, cultural value, beauty, and social standing. It is a compelling tool to engender conversations on the power of Blackness as a cultural, intellectual, and aesthetic force. The Hair Salon creates a new architectural language/syntax inspired by the material properties of natural Black hair and the rules of its hair care practices. Come see the work of architects and artists from academic institutions across the country exploring this exciting and timely topic!
This exhibition is funded by the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts and supported by the University of Houston Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture and Design and the University of Houston African-American Studies Department.
